The Bears are Awake!

Between Port McNeill and Port Hardy there  are areas along the highway where every spring  the black bears come to graze on a variety fresh grasses and other juicy greens.  You are almost guaranteed to see at least one bear as you drive the 45 kilometers between the two communities.

Black Bear

I photographed  this one (from the safety of my car) on my way back from Port Hardy this evening.

  1. I wish we had bears here in the UK, what a thrilling encounter.

    • We are fortunate to have a variety of wild life on Vancouver Island and the rest of Canada. I sometimes need to remind myself not to take for granted what we have here.

  2. Love the black against the green – great color contrast. You are so lucky to have so much open space … surrounded by concrete, I’m having to get outta dodge more and more to find the earth and wildlife I love.

Thanks for sharing your great shot, Lesa.

    • Thanks Lynn,
The bear was more interested in eating than me snapping off it’s portrait.
Yes we are truly fortunate to be able to see wildlife in their enviroment. We sometimes take for granted the fresh air and open space… it only takes a trip to the city to be grateful for what we have here.
